Cops: Heroin, cocaine seized in 2 busts
In separate drug busts, Jersey City East and West District narcotics officers took 500 bags of suspected heroin and more than 100 vials of suspected cocaine off the streets this weekend, officials said.
West District officers staked out an apartment on Bergen Avenue near Reed Street and, after making undercover drug buys, arrested six people on drug charges and confiscated 500 bags of suspected heroin Friday, according to police reports.
Police arrested Bernice Kelly, 48, of Belmont Avenue; Maryanne Williamson, 41, of Bergen Avenue; and Gregory White, 33, of Woodlawn Avenue and charged them with drug possession, possession with intent to distribute and possession with intent to distribute near a school and park. White also was charged with resisting arrest and eluding police, reports said.
Also arrested were Joseph Pulsum, 48, of Gifford Avenue, and Samuel Rivera, 44, of Palisade Avenue, both of Jersey City, and Marion Small, 50, of Broadway in Bayonne, reports said.
East District narcotics officers got a tip of a large shipment of drugs was being delivered on Saturday to a building in the Lafayette Gardens Public Housing complex and officers set up surveillance at the Carbon Street address, reports said.
Police arrested Gerald Toatly, 23, of Virginia Avenue, and Jessenia Paula, 20, of Montgomery Street, on a variety of drug charges, reports said.
Toatly was also charged with aggravated assault on a police officer after struggling before he was arrested, reports said, adding that Paula was charged with resisting arrest and eluding police, reports said.
Police watched as Paula and Toatly drove a van to the building and Toatly got out carrying a shopping bag, reports said. He walked up to a man, took money from him in exchange for an object in the bag and then got back into the van, reports said.
The pair then drove away and police began their pursuit, catching the van when it got stuck in traffic at Jersey Avenue and Montgomery Street, police said.
In the van's center console they found 107 bags of suspected cocaine, 33.2 grams of loose suspected cocaine, $212, razor blades and numerous empty vials, reports said.
