Man sentenced on heroin charge
Darryl Winkfield was just looking for someone to give him a helping hand when his car broke down in February. As it turned out, that was just the beginning of Winkfield's woes.
When Winkfield, 23, flagged down Cincinnati Police Officer Matthew Vogeler, the officer was more than willing to help -- as soon as he saw Winkfield's driver's license. Winkfield admitted to the officer he didn't have a license, so Vogeler then looked inside Winkfield's car.
That's where the officer saw capsules and bags of heroin. He then arrested Winkfield, charging him with possession of and trafficking in heroin.
Winkfield cut a deal with prosecutors in April and agreed to plead guilty to trafficking in heroin in exchange for the possession charge being dropped. He also bargained to be allowed to be sentenced at the end of June and remain free for almost three months.
But when the sentencing day arrived, Winkfield didn't. The judge issued a nationwide arrest warrant for Winkfield, who was arrested Oct. 26 in Atlanta.
"As we all know, he didn't show up," said Hamilton County Common Pleas Court Judge David Davis. "I don't think he should get a free ride for that."
Davis tacked on six more months, sending Winkfield to prison for 2 years.
